Think Outside the Tube! Download Central London Walking Map

by 2007mads @ 2007-02-09 - 01:27:22

This is a map we put together to show you how far the distance is between Zone 1 Tube Stops.
map_for_blog

It is amazing how many stops take less than ten minutes to walk between!

So many journeys are actually far quicker on foot.

When you walk there is no chance of:

being charged
being delayed
having to wait once on the platform
being squashed on the platform or once in the train

Also, when you walk, you dont have to stick to someone else's plan. Walking means you can pop in to a shop to pick up the newspaper, have a coffee, post a letter, get some loo roll, or buy that Valentine's gift for your significant other you have been meaning to take care of!

Walking also means you can plan your own route to suit your needs on a given day-- if you are late you can take a short cut If you have some time, stop off at the Tate on your way home, or for a drink at the pub with mates.

Walking is about flexibility, and thinking outside of the box!

A great project. Something which can help people enjoy the architecture of London while not having your face crammed into someone’s armpit (unless you like that sort of thing). One other campaign that is worthwhile – in a fitness sense – is get people to walk UP the escalator. Come on. You sit at your desk for 10 hours a day. You get up to take a pee, get a coffee (rinse and repeat).

Top marks.

PS: this background doesn’t work - one cant see the fields to enter the text. Perhaps change text from black to white. A small point.

Great idea, wanted to use the map, however when I printed it out the map was too small to read. Would be great if map was in colour as well. Or is it just me...

8 minutes from Bond Street to Oxford Circus!?!
When was this walked and by whom?
Clearly you have never tried this at lunch time, when its sunny, when there are tourists (we all love 'em), during the sales, or on the run up to christmas. There is no indication who walked it either! If you walked down the middle of Oxford Street then you might manage it, although i don't recommend it, but otherwise I would add about 5 mins to some of these

Brilliant project. I'm a tourist and just saw your map on Londonist. I got here yesterday and was planning on walking to avoid the tube costs -- your map is exactly what I need, perfect!! Oddly enough, I'm here for an open day at CSM, so the fact that you are students there makes the whole thing feel even more fortuitous. Meanwhile, I'm sending the link to all my friends who are working here, with instructions to pass it around their offices. Cheers!

Brilliant project, but Waterloo to Bank in 15 Minutes - that sounds like running speed, not walking...

I'd like to know the route from Bank to Waterloo that only takes 15 minutes.... it's always taken me at least 25!

great project. saw it today page 22 in evening standard-maybe u should extend it for the tube to the west!

Yes that is nigh on impossible. You'd have to take Waterloo or Blackfriars Bridge and you're looking at a brisk 20 minutes. Having said that I once walked from the South Bank to Liverpool Street in 30 mins by going over Waterloo Bridge then along the Embankment.

Guys!! I've always wondered about this! I'm printing the map, this is so useful. Thanks!!

walking is good but I've walked some of those routes very fast so i am very skeptical about the times listed.

Great idea. A couple of comments
- the current version of the map seems to be missing the time to walk from Barbican to Moregate
- It would also be great to add some of the 'walking' interconnections e.g.
-- Regents Park to Gt Portland Street (about 2 minutes)
-- Gt Portland Street to Googe Street (about 7 minutes?)
-- Bayswater to Queensway (about 2 minutes!)
etc.

I was speaking to some american colleagues of mine who were over a few weeks ago and was explaining to them that places in London aren't actually that far apart if you just look up a walking route. They wouldn't believe me and always take Taxi's everywhere during their trips - even if it takes longer thanks to traffic and one way systems!
I'm forwarding this to them!

Well done and make sure you patent and then sell these maps - you deserve it

Great Idea, well done. One of the things that can be quite time consuming is the interchange between one line and another - both the walk through the foot tunnels and then the wait for another train. The benefits of walking between stops can therefore be even greater if going from a station on one line to a station on another. Walking between (say) Temple and Chancery Lane will take around 10 minutes and saves you 2 changes and around 6 stops. I'm not sure how you could show all the available combinations without cluttering up the map -- maybe just show the ones that are the shortest or which have the greatest benefit? Good Luck!

A great scheme and one I've always endorsed - and put into practice. A further twist would be to display walking times between certain stations on different lines. They're not all relevant of course, but did you know it takes about 10 minutes to walk from Lancaster Gate to Paddington (5 stops one change), or about 5 minutes to walk from Cannon Street to Bank (2 stops one change)? Keep on truckin'!

I walk Waterloo to Temple regularly. from Waterloo station concourse to outside Temple takes 9 or 10 Minutes (depending on the road crossings)

Nice work, I posted your site on Lonely Planet Travel forums, there was some positive feedback and even a suggestion by one person to add it to the LP Guide to London. It got a lot of hits (164) considering how many replies there were to the post.

I think should think about taking this further, it'd be quite simple to create a MySQL database and have a simple web front-end so people could submit times for you. You could then automatically generate a map on-line with average times, which is probably better as you'd get a more realistic time based on peak hour vs off peak walking times, etc.

Another suggestion was to know travel times on the tube between stations as a comparison to walking times. Again this data could be collected with the help of the "people" through a web submission front-end. That'd save you guys spending your weekend on the tube! ;)

Great work, hope you get good marks for it ;) Cheers.

This map hasn’t quite cracked it - it doesn’t show how close some stations on different lines are. A good example being Queensway to Bayswater - in an area with a lot of hotels, a lot of tourists follow the underground map and spend ages to go one stop on the Central Line, make an awkward change at Notting Hill Gate to the Circle line, to emerge at Bayswater about 100 yards up the same street, Queensway!

This website shows stations that are less than 500metres apart and therefore within easy walking distance eg Great Portland Street and Regents Park

Map of walking times between tube stations
Shortwalk have posted a great map of the time taken to walk between London tube maps (via we-make-money-not-art). Last time I was in London, I eschewed the tube, and went around by foot, and for longer journeys, or when it was raining, the Bus. Walki...

I found this when looking into walking from Euston to Liverpool Street (normal commute) during the likely 3 day tube strikes in September (07).

Looks like a real help and I'll be showing my colleagues :)

An important settlement for two millennia, London's history goes back to its founding by the Romans. Since its settlement, London has been the centre of many important movements and phenomena throughout history such as the English Renaissance, the Industrial Revolution, and the Gothic Revival. Google Page Rank Update - Tue 29 April 2008

Hobo were getting reports of a Google Page Rank update on Tue 29 April 2008, happening across certain data centers.

It’s clear it’s not complete, and it’s worth pointing out Google Toolbar PR Green you see in the update is out of date and not an accurate measurement of the strength of a page, it’s more "an indication" of the quality of a page some time ago.

A Google Toolbar PR Update is usually not much more than a bit of free advertising for Google. A high PR does not necessarily mean a lot of traffic, although it does usually cause quite a stir in the webmaster community.

Visit hobo for a complete detail.
